Intimate Liminal Space is the next iteration ofWhen You’re Strange, in which Hooi-Ying does a two-part performance.

Part 1 involves collective poetry reading and a dance piece with KRUMP dance elements.

Part 2 was a collective painting in which the audience was asked to introduce themselves/ make their mark through paint on a large paper, after which Hooi-Ying ‘met’ audience through the their paintings , using dance as their medium.

The performance is an exploration of loneliness through the collective and the individual and what those terms can mean for this theme. Hooi-Ying wanted to invite the audience to re-imagine connection with them outside the linear time and space we have been expected to adhere to, and together explore the complexity of their own loneliness. It is a way to try and move with the intimate liminal space created through performance art and collective creation.

“In the impersonal world, we live in now, a world of Western individualism, a world of patriarchy-induced isolation, in a world of digital distance, to find connection, to know intimacy we need to look in new places, places beyond what is considered ‘real’ to re-imagine love and care outside of capitalistic constraints we must look in places its presence is weakened, a place ‘unreal’, a place called the intimate liminal space” - Hooi-Ying
